Brazil beat Peru in straight sets

LIMA, Peru, September 12, 2009 – Defending champions Brazil defeated Peru in straight sets 25-21, 25-13, 25-15 advancing to a gold medal match against USA in the II Final Four Women’s Volleyball Cup.

Brazil dominated the match relying on strong attacks and good field defense and solid blocking. The losers will play Dominican Republic for third place on Sunday.

Regiane Bidias led Brazil with 17 points, Adenizia Silva had 9 and Welissa “Sassá” Gonzaga contributed 7 points. Leyla Chihuan had 10 points for Peru.

“Once again we could handle the pressure of the local fans and I am happy with the victory. Now we have to prepare for tomorrow’s match against United States. Today we worked with our serves and our second offensive options were positives,” said Paulo Barros, the Brazilian coach.

Leyla Chihuan, the Peruvian captain, commented: “There is not much to say. During the week you all have seen what we have. We need to work harder and with concentration. If not, we will continue far away behind our opponents.”
